MEMBERSHIP DRIVES NOW UNDERWAY: Bacon Creek Watershed Council, Bacon Creek Historical Society, Community Friends, Homemakers, Hart Co Historical Society and Hart Co Chamber invite you to become a member today! June 25 Bacon Creek Watershed Council meeting will be held at Three Forks Bacon Creek Baptist Church, keynote speaker is Kate Peake from the Kentucky Onsite Wastewater Association. Just a reminder; Bonnieville Homecoming begins Sun. July 1^st with an old time gospel singing under the gingko tree, Stars & Stripes Beauty Pageant is July 3^rd and the parade is July 4^th! CLEAN UP BACON CREEK DAY is Saturday, July 28 in Bonnieville. Everyone is invited!

Jiggs & Tooter Jaggers Tourist Camp Store

The following building that sits on 31W in Bonnieville, KY was both a store and home to Arthur(Jiggs) and Evelyn(Tooter) Jaggers and their son Leon. The small room on the left was a cream station and the large tree on the right was one of many that lined a quaint lane that once held 4-5 small cabins built in the late forties to accommodate travelers on U.S. 31-W. Behind the big sign was a lane with big beautful trees leading to the little cabin rentals. That same lane originally ran up to the front of the Jameson House before the L&N railroad cut it in half.

Whitman Cemetery on Frenchman's Knob

Whitman Cemetery:
located off 728, on Frenchman's knob across from Locust grove road. Small very well kept cemetery. Several stones are in disrepair from age and are weather worn. There are several graves marked only with field stones, one at the head - one at the foot. Along with visiting the graveyard and taking photos, I researched the cemetery at the library and found the given name of the cemetery and additional names of those buried. The reference book “Cemeteries of Hart County Northeast / Northwest Sections" lists all who are buried here. I had often wondered how 'old' cemeteries acquired their names. I supposed the namesake had donated the land, in some cases, there are only 1 or 2 headstones with the cemetery's surname buried there. I believe many of the cemeteries derive their names from the surname of oldest found gravesite. The graves with the Whitman surname are the oldest at this location. If you would like a larger photo of any of the tombstones for your family record, please contact me and I will be happy to share by emailing you a larger version. I am going back to finish photographing the other headstones later in the month.

The Bacon Creek Historical Society’s mission is to rediscover the rich heritage that exists through Bonnieville, KY and the Bacon Creek area. Our goal is to preserve that heritage and share our history with the surrounding communities and visitors to our area. We are interested in sharing information, artifacts and photographs relating to all of the battles, stockades, bridge burnings and encampments at Bacon Creek during the Civil War and honoring America’s love of Baseball during the Bonnieville Bombers era.
